What is Concrete Canoe?
Concrete Canoe is a canoe made of concrete that can float in water. For the purposes of the Cal Poly Pomona Team, the concrete canoe being created will be utilized to compete at the 2023 Pacific Southwest Symposium (PSWS) at the California State University, Northridge (CSUN). In 1971, the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign held the first intercollegiate race against Purdue. Since then university engineering students have constructed concrete canoes and competed against each other. The Concrete Canoe Competition provides civil engineering students with hands-on, leadership, and pratical experience.
Our Mission
In 1971, the University of Illinois held the first Concrete Canoe Competition against Purdue University students and became was the first intercollegiate race. As Cal Poly Pomona students our goal is to support each other as a team and make it to nationals! Our concrete canoe team hasn’t made it to nationals in nine years, but we plan to change that! Due to the pandemic our team has not been able to build a canoe in two years which has set us back tremendously; however, we have gotten back into researching the structural and hull design portion of the canoe, began testing mix-designs, and began setting up training for canoe paddling. Our mission this year is to learn to work together and grow as a team.

Hands-On Experience
A large portion of concrete canoe is using our hands. Being a part of this group will teach you the value of hands-on projects by working with different concrete mixes, constructions, and even paddling!

Working with concrete will enable you to understand the different applications and technologies used in the concrete industry.

Concrete canoe is a club where you can collaborate with fellow undergraduate civil engineering students, alumni, staff, and industry experts who share a passion for civil engineering.

By becoming involved with a club on campus you will familiarize yourself with activities you enjoy and how to manage your time. Concrete canoe is requires a lot of time; however, it allows you to learn the importance of time management.
